Rules

In Mergado, rules represent a way to edit product information in bulk. Each rule can be applied either to all products in your feed or, and most often, to a query of products.

Tip: A rule can be created on “Rules” page by clicking the "Create rul" button.

Important information

Order of rules

Rules are applied from the top down, i.e. if some of your rules overlap in their function, it is the lower rule that will have the last word. You can change the order of rules by dragging & dropping.

You can also temporarily disable a rule (the rule will stay disabled until you enable it manually again), edit, duplicate or delete any rule.

Applying rules

Whenever you make an changes in Rules, i.e. create a new rule, edit an existing rule, delete a rule etc. you need to click the "Apply rules" button in order for the changes to apply. This way Mergado will process the changes made and you will be able to check them on the “Products” page.

When the rules are applied Mergado waits for automatic syncing that will send your new data to comparison shopping engines. If you need the data to by synced as soon as possible, you can force a manual syncing on the “Settings” page in “Regenerate export” section by clicking “Regenerate changed” or “Regenerate all”.

Same procedure would be used if there were major changes in the input feed, e.g. price changes, and you want to work with relevant data.

The comparison shopping service will then be downloading feed with all changes applied and with the most relevant data.

Types of rules

There are several types of rules in Mergado. Here is their listing along with examples of use.

Overwrite

Description

This rule completely overwrites the original values of the element. One of the most commonly used rules.

Use

You have a selection of goods that represents all products whose MANUFACTURER element contains the term Bosch Technologies, but you know the correct name is Bosch. So you create an Overwrite rule, insert the correct value, and apply this rule to the saved selection of Bosch Technologies. You also set the target element for the MANUFACTURER and insert the Bosch text as the new value.

Similarly, you can use the rule if you need to replace the contents of one element with another - like PRODUCT for PRODUCTNAME. You create a rule to select all products that overwrite the values of the original PRODUCT to PRODUCTNAME (use the % tag to assign the element, the system will automatically offer the elements to you).

Find and Replace

Description

This rule seeks for text in the element's content and replaces it with another text. A very useful rule which allows you to remove objectionable content.

Use

It may happen that your e-shop generates something extra in product names. For example, a product may be named: Hannah Attaley at e-shop shop.cz. You create a Find and Replace rule and set it to find the text: at e-shop shop.cz and replace it with an empty value. This rule lets you delete all of these strings in the selected element, leaving only the correct name: Hannah Attaley.

Rename Categories in Bulk

Description

Many e-shops use own category tags, but some search engines indicate a clear specification of the CATEGORYTEXT element content. This rule makes editing easier for you. For ease of work, this rule allows you to add multiple categories of pairs. Thanks to the added lines, everything can be saved as one rule, which saves a lot of work.

Use

For example, if you have your Cups category, which is an incomplete path, type it in the left column. The word completion will recommend you the exact specification of the category according to your feed content. Start to type in the right column and the word completion will automatically recommend you the available categories of a particular search engine. In the case of Google Shopping, the word completion will advise you the category: Home & Garden > Kitchen & Dining > Tableware > Drinkware > Coffee & Tea Cups.

Tip

An incomplete entry category can also be used - for example, you have several categories for USB Flash Drives in the e-shop according to their size, but the search engine has just one category for these discs. Your categories are:

  • USB Drives | 4GB,
  • USB Drives | 8GB and so on.

You will set USB Drives as the entry category in this rule. Mergado will find you all the categories relating to it. The output value will be: Electronics > Electronics Accessories > Computer Components > Storage Devices > USB Flash Drives.

Rename Values in Bulk

Description

This rule allows you to completely overwrite the original element values based on values in another element. This is a very versatile and useful rule which is often used.

Use

If we want to set different cost-per-clicks for products from different manufacturers, we can easily set this up by this rule. In the left column, select the element containing manufacturer (for example, with Heureka it’s MANUFACTURER) and a cost-per-click setting element in the right column (HEUREKA_CPC).

Then we can start to type in the name of a particular manufacturer on the left. Mergado immediately begins to whisper its full name. It is also possible to select the "Pre-Fill the Left Side" link on the left which loads all the values from the selected element.

Unnecessary values can be deleted by the delete icon. They can also be ignored. If the right side of the rule is not filled, such a line is not saved. You can fill in the values only for those lines that you want to save.

Example

  • on the left side, we will have the "Adidas" manufacturer ... on the right, we set the cost per click 5

  • on the left side, we will have the manufacturer "Nike" ... on the right, we set the cost per click 8

  • on the left side, we will have the manufacturer "Reebok" ... on the right, we set the cost per click 11

  • etc.

Tip

Similarly to the Rename Categories in Bulk rule, you can also use the feature on the left to find and write down only part of the text that is contained in the values of the element selected on the left of the rule.

Overwrite in Bulk

Description

This rule allows you to completely overwrite the original values of the element and set new values that will be different for individual product selections. All in one rule. This is a very useful rule that belongs to the often used ones.

Use

If you divide your products in the Products site into price levels (cost up to 1000, 1000 - 3000, 3000 - 5000, over 5000) and then you want to set different cost-per-clicks for these product groups, you set everything easily with the Overwrite in Bulk rule.

Just select an element you want to overwrite (for example, HEUREKA_CPC) and then select a specific product selection on the left side of the rule. On the right, set a value for the selected element.

Example

  • price selection up to 1000 ... cost per click: 5

  • price selection 1000 - 3000 ... cost per click: 8

  • price selection 3000 - 5000 ... cost per click: 11

  • price selection over 5000 ... cost per click: 15

Tip

On the left, you can use the "Pre-Fill Left Side" link to retrieve all the product selections available to you. Unnecessary values can be deleted by the delete icon. They can also be ignored. If the right side of the rule is not filled, such a line is not saved. You can fill in the values only for those lines that you want to save.

Hide Product

Description

This rule completely hides the output product from Mergado.

Use

Hiding goods that are not competitive when selling on comparison engines is a way to save on costs. For example, Mergado users use it for goods that have a long delivery time. If a competitor has it in stock and for a similar price, it is difficult for the customer to buy it from you. In practice, for example, you make a selection of products with a value of DELIVERY_DATE larger than (for example) 10 and apply a hiding rule to it.

Similarly, this rule is useful when you advertise on GLAMI and there are other items besides fashion in your e-shop. By creating a selection with a different CATEGORYTEXT and its subsequent hiding you make sure that only products from the fashion category get to the search engine.

Setup CPCBidding

Description

This rule allows you to dynamically set the cost-per-click from search engines to your e-shop. Good cost-per-click bidding is very important for good advertising results.

This rule can work in two ways:

  • Depending on the minimum clickthrough rate: The rule considers the minimum cost-per-click for goods in each category, and you can raise this price by any amount.

  • Depending on the products' price: Here you specify the products' price percentage you want to offer per click. On a specific case, it will look like the $ 500 product will be priced at $ 5 per CPC for this rule at 1%.

Note: If the bidding's value is lower than the search engine's permissible size for the category, the minimum valid value is automatically set.

Shorten, Change Font Case, Round Number

Description

Shorten, Change Font Case, or Round Number rules are very simple and intuitive. No need to supply anything to their function.

Set UTM Parameters in URL

Description

This rule helps you mark a URL for Google Analytics.

When using this rule, you should know that certain changes in UTM parameters may cause product unpairingonsearch engines or an information loss in Google Analytics.

Remove HTML characters

Description

This rule removes HTML tags from the element's content.

Use

There are often prohibited HTML characters in the product's label (element DESCRIPTION). That means a mess in pointed brackets, which has no place in the caption, and this rule will get rid of it.

Calculation

Description

This rule allows you to perform calculations with variables.

Use

You can also set calculations in Mergado (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, brackets, and variables).

Shipping Rates Settings

Description

Using this rule, you can easily set shipping prices.

Use

Shipping's price is a key weapon for e-shops advertising on search engines. This rule will help you easily set your transport prices exactly to your needs.

Product Parameters Setting

Description

This rule helps you set up different product parameters.

Use

Parameters PARAM play a key role in advertising on search engines. A number of e-shops don't list them in XML or misspell them.
